 Sinister Dirt Jump Frame
I won this frame at the "Earthed Video Premiere" in Dana Point a few weeks ago. Iron Horse was shipping me the frame because it was in San Diego.

Check out what was on my doorstep Friday night.

Now I would like to build it up. Opinions?

Is that a 1.5 head tube? Great looking bike Lag. Good photo coverage as well; the littl strip tease was appreciated ;-) Build? I dunno'. I'm sure a few will have worthwhile suggestions. Cool looking frame though.

It is a 1.5 oversized head tube.

Build it? /sbin/fsck -i hell-yeah! Singlespeed it and strap a nice 100mm fork on the front. If you have any doubts about that idea then go to a Specialized dealer and grab a P1 off the rack and try that. Cheap bike but with slack head angle, afore mentioned fork ( a lower level 'Zoke ) and a single rear disc and some big fatties I found it to be quite fun. Think it had like 24x16 gears. Add a front disc and it's all the better. N'way, that frame looks to be of simuar geometry. You probably have enough spare parts about just to mess with it and get a general idea of what it's like, I'm guessing. CHUQ WANT P-BIKE! Hey, it was like a BMX for old fat dudes, blast from the past. Besides, I can aford one and it ain't no Huffy ;-) N'way, that's what I'd do if your winfall was mine but that's just my huble opinion...

I am thinking single speed. Ratios? Thinking Evil bash up front. Thinking Maxxis Minion 2.35 single ply. Flat pedals....

32:18 to start with for jumping
        - Evil bash guard is unavailable (they are called E13 now - and are still awesome)
        - I think black accessories (headset, cranks, bash, pedals) - would make it look like an angry hornet diving into the jumps...strong crankset (RF Northshores, Truvative Hollofcener, Saint, Profile) - tough, but not too expensive wheelset (XT/Rynolites or similar) - Minion 2.35's are perfect - Stan's (OF COURSE!) - FSA reducing headset, Marzocchi Z1 QR20 fork, E13 Pedals (when they come out which is supposed to be soon!)

If you look in the second picture, you can see a bag of goods.

In that bag is some reducers for the headset, I havent looked at them yet and now I am curious to see the brand.

Why would you build a frame with a OnePointFive head tube then reduce it?

they are much stronger, because of the larger bearings in the reducing headset I think? - so much less likely to ovalize the headtube when you come up "short" (pun intended) on a double and slice your hand like a Ginzu through a tomato..."and it's still sharp enough to cut through this tin can!"

how is he going to make it a single-speed with that vertical dropout? (which looks detachable - maybe there is a horizontal one that can bolt on?) - is he going to have to have one of those chain-tensioning thingies on there? - 'cause those always seem lame...

unless you go 1x9 like Sgt Brown (who knows a few things about dirt jumping AND HLD's) thinks you should - my Bruiser is 1x9 right now (with an Evil/E13 SRS) - it's good, but I'd love to have NO chain slap with a ss

Yeh, that's the only drawback to that scheme, using a chain-tension thingie. But at least if he get's tired of the SS idea he can easily goto gears. That P1 I'm wanting has the same deal but it has rear facing drops. Weird. On the upside of a chain thing, and please correct me if I'm wrong because I'm no SS rider (yet) but it would simplify the trailside presto-chango gear trick. Meaning, carring an extra gear of lesser ratio and then changing it once you get to the trailhead. I'm one of those who launches from the driveway so the idea is attractive to me. One gear for street bashing and another for the dirt. Perhaps my perspective will change with experience. N'way, my own attraction to such a bike, smallish frame, big tires, big fork, SS and a disc or two was the shear simplicity of it. Looks fun for the short early morning bashes I do before work and as a fun grocery-getter. But that's just me. Like I said before, reminds me of the BMX stuff from childhood days but updated to my age. I test rode such a contraption and it was fun as could be. Just hop on and go. I saw his pics of that frame and it reminded me of it. Um, I'll stop rambling now...

    Hey Lag,
With out a doubt you need a Sherman Breakout Plus up front! That would be the perfect fork for that bike.
It just so happens that I won a Sherman Breakout Plus at that same Video Premier. And it just so happens to be for sale!!!! The fork is over at PUSH right now. Darren wanted to check out the innards.

Now that I think about it. That fork is probably too much for you in many ways. First, it will raise the front end up and you may not be able to get your stubby little leg over the frame. Second, your idea for dirt jumping is actually called riding off a curb so you won’t need that much travel!! Third, I HATE PEPPERS $600.00!!!!!

If it was my bike...take off the stickers. The paint is sweet on that frame, It is more metallic in person, no? Then build it up using as many polished aluminum parts as possible (hubs, cranks, stem, seatpost...)

Do they make panoracer 2.4's with the yellow sidewall? That might be over the top, but could look sweet.

Its all about how you look.

I really like Truvativ's products; that build is getting me fired up! I have some researching to do on forks... Not to sure about that Rock Shox up there.

If I do a 1x9, it would be Sram Triggers over the XTR.

I would use your Thompson 50mm stem and post.

Bonz levers is whats missin'. ;) Remember my rootbeer blur build? You made some nice improvements on it when it was being built. In fact, you even helped with my Boxxer (springs and washers) too. Maybe you can have a hand in this build.. ;)

screw the Psylo - I've NEVER hear of one lasting in the long run - leaky seals anyone?

Marzocchi make a fine, durable product...

have you asked the Ironhorse guys if there is a horizontal option that can be bolted on instead of those (removable) dropouts? - I know (and this IS gonna be confusing) - that Sinister Bikes' frames have that option...

I have a Pyslo SL now with standard dropouts though. The seals are leaking.... I could save a lot of money by throwin that thing on, or better yet, sending it to PUSH.

What about that, sending my Pyslo to PUSH? It isnt 20mm though.

I am going to email Iron Horse about the horizontal option. Great idea Mac. Worth lookin' into.

saving money? WTF you talkin 'bout, Gary Coleman? - sending it to Darren IS interesting - I bet he could make it worthwhile if he has the right parts....I think you can jump without the 20mm (although it's nice to have for strength and rigidity)

don't waste your time with Ironhorse - I looked at your photos again and the dropout is only replaceable on the derailer side - the brake side is welded on, so I don't think it can work... :-(

This will definately be a 1x9, no single speed on this bike.

I could always look into changing the lowers and getting a 20mm, sending it to Darren at Push, and still be under the price of a new one.

              That could be an option.

I am saving money so I can buy a chair lift for that bike park by the Flyin B Ranch/Blackstar Canyon.

I own 3 Psylo forks. None of them leak and I use them for XC/Freeride/Dirtjump. It is a great fork for Dirt Jumping. Light, Stiff, and good adjustment for Dirt Jumping and racing. Marzocchi stuff is great, but not sold on a plush freeride fork for jumping. I could see using one of the 100mm dirt jumpers. Smitty from Romic uses one and seems to work great for him.

I didn't realize before that it doesn't have sliding or horizontal dropouts, so nogo on the single speed option...singleators look dorky. I say build it with a Psylo Tulio (20mm through axle), 721 rims, Easton and Thomson, your choice of XTR or SRAM 9.0 drive train, 2.35 single ply High Roller front, 2.35 Single ply Larsen TT in rear.

Lag, I'm not going to be on line or available by phone much today, but just call the Bike Co and have them pick the parts you need me to fondle.
