Best Beer V

Ahh, Stone Smoked Porter. One of my all-time favorites. I had it last night, and followed it up with a very young, but still quite drinkable Vertical Epic. Posted by El Jefe a 35 year old on 11/06/04

Fuller's Porter is a darned good beer.
Some brew porters to be way out of style and strong enough to hit you over the head, like a stout. Porters should be subtle, thin and complex and this one is exactly those things. If any brewery can nail a British style, Fullers is it. Posted by GC on 06/06/05

I had Delirium Nocturnum last night. I thought it wasn't quite as smooth as Delirium Tremens, but still more well rounded than Chimay. It was a lovely 9.6% alcohol, disguised quite well by the rich malt and Belgian yeast. Yum. Posted by El Jefe a 35 year old on 11/04/04

Speaking of Belgian beers...
So far, a good week in Singapore for sampling Belgians: 1. A couple of Rochefort 10's. 11.3%ABV, but verrrrry smooth. Still my favorite beer of all time. Wish I could find it in the OC. Oh well, gives me something to look forward to on my visits to SingSing. 2. Abbaye de Rocs. Another really good Belgian dark ale, 9%ABV, hints of plum flavor, can't find this one in the OC, either... 3. St. Sebastiaan Grand Cru. Interesting, lighter flavor than the others, but not one I'd look for back home. 4. Some other pale Belgian ale, but by then, who knows what the h*ll I was drinking... I think it was a Rodenbach
Though the beer was good, for sure, it was probably the strangest night for food I've ever had. Here's a rundown of the food consumed while sampling the brews: 1. Raw octopus (pretty good, very sushi-like) 2. Raw oysters (not my thing) 3. Steamed New Zealand green mussels with plenty of garlic 4. Four kinds of German sausage + sourkraut + potato salad 5. Roast rabbit (very mild and good) 6. Grilled kangaroo ribs (ugggghhh... very gamey, like mutton from h*ll) 7. Pork knuckle (a bit stronger taste than carnitas, darker meat, but tasty)
Weird... Next time, I guess we'll have to try the alligator.
Hey, if anyone knows anywhere to find the Rochefort 10 in the OC, post it here please!!!!

I had a Diabolique Cuvee last night. I believe the alcohol content is close to Delirium Nocturnum, but not quite as malty. A bit more of a pilsner type, with a nice Belgian trappist finish. One of those big bottles definitely goes a long way.
Tonight is Father's Office...many good choices.
Tomorrow night is James Squire Australian Amber with a couple shots of Corallejo Anejo tequila.

Tried a Diabolique from Andelot Proefbrouwerij (Belgium) over the weekend. $5.99 at TJ's for a 750ml bottle, so it's a cheap Chimay substitute. I liked it, you may too.

Yes! I have two more of those in the fridge. I like the hopping for bitterness, but the Acme doesn't seem to have the aromatics it "should" for an IPA. It's a little lighter in body than many...great for tossing down in hot weather. Last night, we had them with smoked tri-tip.

- Re: Best Beer V
The Acme is good, but IPA over a month in bottle will start to lose any dry hop aroma (that real hoppy or citrusy nose and flavor immediately present). IPA is best very young or out of the keg so that the aroma stays with it.
Tried a Hoptown IPA last night. It was an English style (use of a Burton's style yeast, producing fruity esters) and bitter. They used some of a "C" hop (prob. a Cascade) for the citrus nose to tease the fruit flavor that would fill the palate on the way down. Good. Unfortunately, it had the same lack of true hop nose like you described. Posted by GC on 04/13/04

Agreed, had a draft Anderson IPA at The Library last night. It was, of course, better than from the bottle. Followed that with a Stone Pale Ale (I know, sorta backwards, I was thinking of going with the Bastard but one IPA on an empty stomach was already doin the trick). It took a few swigs to clear the palate, but a decent Pale Ale. Both are excellent with the turkey meatloaf. Posted by Black Bart on 04/14/04

Had some dogfish head 120 min IPA last night. They had a note on the chalkboard at the bar that it was the strongest beer in the world at 24.6% ABV. Lol. It was actually quite good, surprisingly! It better be at $13/12oz bottle. I doubt you'd need to drink more than one at a sitting though.

Ok, My favorite current beers are:
Lagunitas-The Kronic (Censored) Rich Copper Ale and 7.7%ABV. Careful with this one, you can't taste the alcohol at all. Rich carmel taste and verrrrrryyyyy smoooov...
040404 Stone Vertical Epic - A good, young, Abbey Trippel with a kick of lime and citrusy flavors. Should age very well if you can keep from drinking it!! 8.5%ABV and very tastey, if you can find it, buy as much as you can and let it age...
Lastly, besides the usual suspects (Ruination IPA and Double Bastard) I tried a Moylans Kilt Lifter, Scotch Ale. Very good, strong chocolate and caramel scents, and great warm mouthfeel. Not particulary bitter or complex, but very, very, drinkable; but, at 8% ABV, you might be advised to go easy!! I have to admit, I won't be laying these down to wait for the intended Vertical Epic consumption method. That's fun, but I just don't have the refrigerator to dedicate to the right temperatures for several years. I've been using a one-year rule, to let the ales settle-in, because I don't think they'll be near to the intended result when consumed in the year of their labeling.
I did multi-year laydowns of Thomas Hardy, Sierra Nevada Celebration and several homebrews in the 80/90's but my folks won't let me monopolize their spare fridge anymore. Posted by EBasil riding a Manitou HT from San Diego on 04/19/04

Yeah, uh, that sounds a lot like how I found out my folks didn't want to leave me with sole use of their fridge. My Dad commented to me about one of the beers he drank. I actually drove to LA with a cooler the next morning to perform an extraction (with extreme prejudice).

Sad news in the beer world:
Today it was announced that Canada's Sleeman Breweries is acquiring Unibroue:
http://www.unibroue.com/brewery/040420.pdf
To me, this is not encouraging news. Sleeman is Canada's third largest brewer, although considerably smaller than Molson and Labatt. They brew several beers that are unremarkable to my taste and have the distribution rights to a number of import brands in Canada. Unibroue is unique in North American brewing, with its own distinctive Quebecois attitude and accent, and brews several outstanding Belgian styles that have rather wide distribution in Canada and the US.
I might look upon the deal more favorably if Sleeman had acquired the rights only to distribute the Unibroue beers in English-speaking Canada, but Sleeman's attitude about beer in general is much less experimental and you have to wonder if the innovation in styles will continue.
C'est la vie, as I'm sure someone is saying. Posted by GC on 04/20/04

Their history of acquisition and brand consolidation may mean the end to some of those great beers. Every brewery/brand they've touched has been "dumbed down" for mass markets or eliminated. Posted by GC on 04/21/04

- Re: Best Beer V
Although this might seem like a bad thing, a crappy beer producer buying a great beer producer, Sleeman will probably not change any of Unibroues beer formulas. If they wanted to make more crappy beer they would probably just expand their current production facility or buy another crappy beer brand.
These mergers have been a happening alot in the wine world and usually it is for the better, unless the company is bought by Gallo, then it goes to crap. Posted by Uhkuhjillion a 28 year old Cross-Country riding a a Jereboam of Arogant Bastard from Pasadena on 04/21/04

You've hit it on the head, Steelman is the Gallo of beers.
They are known for sliming lines down to only the most pedestrian and killing styles and techniques of good breweries like Le Signeurale and Upper Canada (other breweries that they've purchased and dumbed down).
This is akin to Miller buying Stone.

Alrighty.... I know it's only 2pm on a Thursday afternoon but I had a six pack in the fridge staring at me. And what better to go with a hummus platter for lunch than an Avery White Rascal served in a Belgian glass. Simple and to the point- tastes like Chimay but at a fraction of the price. Maybe a slightly less sweet and a bit more hops and do I dare say I like this better?. It's brewed with coriander and orange peel, but you could have fooled me as they're no where on my palate. Ah yes, but it is members only (not the jacket) at the CA Homebrew Fest tonight. Trick or Treat from club to club to sample their best....oh yeah, it is free. Opening day (and closing day) is tomorrow.
Stone's master brewer is usually there as well as other greats with their private reserve to sample.
Should be a good weekend.....I just hope I remember it. ;) Posted by GC on 04/30/04

Ah yes, very good times.
If you can make it next year, it is worth the trip.
I had some private stash of some great brewers. Amazing beers. Around the campfire one night one of our new found friends broke out the past six years of Big Foot Barleywine from Sierra Nevada. We opened them up, year by year, and all sampled the aged barleywines and compared the differences. '97 was a good year.
Just a short list of the amazing beers we sampled: orange blossom porter a vanilla belgian an amazing tripple a couple of really good IPA's milk stout many good meads
All were done by homebrewers or pros' homemade stash.
There was one really interesting contraption there that I had read about from Dogfish Head. They had made a "hop filter" that would force beer through about six pounds of hops just prior to serving. It did add some aroma, but what it added took away in coldness, as it wasn't a chilled unit. Interesting concept but I think the basic technique of dry hopping is more effective.
Great times and good beers, not to mention a fantastic learning experience if you brew or like good beer. Posted by GC on 05/03/04

Sweet! How can I be your friend? ;) I could really get into a weekend like that.
The head brewmaster at SLO Brewing Co. and I were going through our senior year Food Science classes up at Cal Poly SLO. I would help him brew for SLO brewery and home brew too. Ahhh, so much fun.
We would visit the Wildhorse Winery in Paso Robles, and brew beer by the keg! We would heat up the wort under a big burner in a keg, and do it that way; by the keg... Then, we would of course sample it with many others and have ourselves a very good time.
I need to get back into that personally. It is a great hobby to get into, especially when you know what is happening in the process.
Thanks for sharing, I am sure many people here wish they were there. If you have more info, please post it. :D Posted by Lagwagon on 05/03/04

The more the merrier, bro. Come on down.
A buddy of mine organizes it and they are moving it to Vail Lake next year, which will be a huge imporvement.
Man, brewing at a winery....what could be better. Yep, keg as a kettle is the only way to go. I brew in a keg and it just makes it so much easier.
Let's get you back in! For a couple of peppers (cherry and jalepeno spread) I could be convinced to help with the learning curve. ;) Posted by GC riding a A big wheel from Anaslime Hills on 05/03/04

Oregons Full Sail Ale is great! :) Purchased at Trader Joe's for $5.99. More info for your reading pleasure:
The Full Sail brewery is located in Hood River, Oregon, in the scenic Columbia River Gorge. Known for its ripping winds, endless mountain bike trails, fast water, and deep snow, the region is "The Adrenaline Capital of the Northwest".
At Full Sail, we have been making great beer since 1987. We liked our beer so much, that in 1999 we bought the brewery! With each beer we brew comes a promise of quality that only an owner can give.
Full Sail Celebrates Another First (Hood River, OR) The employees at Full Sail Brewing Company are rolling out the barrels to celebrate yet another first. The ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) buyout was finalized July 2, 1999, making Full Sail America's first and only (ESOP) employee-owned brewery, the company announced today. Full Sail is the only brewery to have ever been named to the "Best 100 Companies to Work For, in Oregon" list by Oregon Business Magazine and have maintained that distinction for five consecutive years. Full Sail brews a line of handcrafted ales and lagers including the award-winning Full Sail Amber, Pale and Rip Curl Ale, as well four seasonal brews. Full Sail is available in 15 western states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

Why I love DeSchutes in many of ways.
Quail Springs IPA.
Great start, bitter. Then straight to fruit as Burton's strain of yeast kicks in. Still more hops. The only thing it is missing is a solid dry hop (aroma), as discussed before, which can only happen in a keg. Besides the dry hop, the only really disappointing part of this IPA is the low % @ 5.8. For an IPA that is pretty low. Most hover in the 7% or above range.
Darned good beer, though, and I've never had a bad one from DeSchutes. Posted by GC on 05/07/04

Deschutes does not make a bad beer. Plus, they sponsor mountain bikers. I contacted them about that and they without any prompting sent me a bunch of shwag, leather coasters, bike water bottles, bottle openers stickers, ect.
Maybe they knew when I was in Bend last I spent excessive amounts of time at the brewery.
They also have these fixe price dinners pairing their beers with various xlnt cuisine on a semi-monthly basis. Not just one beer and a plate of chow. Several courses with a different brew to match.
We need a place like that in SoCal. Karl Strauss is ok but it ain't Deschutes. Not even close.

- Re: Best Beer V
I sampled a little Vertical Epic (this year's release) yesterday. Very young tasting, could use some time to mature, but still a very pleasant brew.
A very light, almost lacy head appears after a soft pour, with the bubbles rising slowly. It seems on initial taste that there is still some bottle conditioning, perhaps a little more noticable fermenting to do, as the first taste is just a bit harsh and over the top. The yeast flavors play a bit heavy compared to the malt and hops flavors, very different than most Stone creations where the hops take the spotlight. The yeast flavors are quite similar to a belgian tripel, some vanilla and pineapple, almost a bubblegum taste at times, countered by a bit of lemon-lime and some clove. The heavy alcohol keeps the beer from sitting on the tongue too long, and helps it feel clean and refreshing. I definitely would call this a very young, immature beer, that will likely develop some serious character in a couple years. Still, I could toss back a couple 22oz bottles on a hot day, and then bask in a drunken stupor under a warm southern California sun. We drank our 02,03 and 04 Verts on Saturday, because we needed to make room...ending the "laydown program" with finality.
Nice writeup on the 04. I can only generally agree, and would add that the 02 and 03 improved mightily over their wait (I used to laydown beers quite a bit and think the first two years are the "sprint" section of the process),and that 04 shouldn't have been opened yet. Wow, just checked my spelling and typing on that last post...not so good. I have a bad case of allergies going on right now that is causing my eyes to swell badly, so I typed that last post with my eyes closed....again, not so good.
Anyway, I'd planned on keeping both bottles stored for a while, but that idea lasted about 10 minutes, and I caved on the first bottle. (closing my swollen eyes, having a few beers and listening to some music, was quite nice this weekend). I think if I buy a whole bunch, I can keep at least one for next year...I think I can, I think I can... Posted by El Jefe on 06/02/04

Picked up a sixer of Mendocino Brewing Company's "Eye of the Hawk" from TJ's yesterday, had one after my ride last night. Ok, now Beer.... Marin Brewing's Eldridge Grade Double IPA: Ya'll know I'm not an IPA fan, but this stuff's the sh!t. Not overly hoppy as I thought and the 8% ABV makes it extra special. That and the mountain bike theme make this is a great after ride beer. (BevMo) Posted by Endo Verendo riding a Pushed 4-Spot from The Valley on 06/04/04

Best Beer I hit the boards. "Silly people. Beer is just a drink, not a religion." ...or so I thought.
Best Beer II, III, IV went by. "Okay, so this is getting ridiculous." GAL, beerheads...
Best Beer V arrives. "Well, maybe I'll have to do a little research, see what all the fuss is about."
Now, this is what my extra fridge in the garage looks like:

Current stock: Chimay Red Ale, Sierra Nevada Summerfest Lager, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Buffalo Bill's Orange Blossom Cream Ale, Bass Ale, Blue Moon Belgian White Ale, Red Hook ESB, Pacifico, Pete's Strawberry Blonde, Pete's Wicked Ale, Stone IPA, Stone Pale Ale.
Conspicuously absent: Celebrator Dopplebock, my current fave. (I get home from BevMo and it mysteriously disappears in front of my eyes!)
Life used to be so simple: triple espresso in the morning, triple espresso after lunch, a Pacifico or two on the weekend, occasional margarita with a nice Mexi meal.
Now, I find myself daydreaming at work... imagining the taste of a full-flavored ale running down my throat ...sniffing the fine chocolatey aroma of my favorite dopplebock ...imagining it swirling around in my mouth after that first sip...

- Re: Best Beer V
I was in AZ over the weekend and payed a visit to the Rio Salado Brewery.
Every Saturday at 1pm, president and brewmaster Tim Gossack, former brewmaster at Deschutes Brewery in Bend, Oregon, leads a brewery tour and tasting. This guy really knows his stuff when it comes to the history of beer and how it's made, much more informative (and tastier) than some Budweiser brewery tour. In addition to being an owner/brewer, he is also a judge for the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup.
The tour and samples are free (8 kinds last weekend) as long as it's your first tour, or you bring someone new. Happy hour (no food served) 'til 6, open until 11 on most nights.
Minutes from South Mountain, so you can work it into a riding weekend! (I also understand Tim sponsors some MTB racers) Posted by Black Bart a 31 year old Die-hard Enthusiast riding a Heley&Weber sling and a Schwinn Cruiser Seven from Santa Monica on 06/15/04

speaking of recovered enough - I'm hurting this morning!
Father's Office last night - started with "Horny Devil" - 10.8%! - VERY tasty Belgian-style tripple! - moved on to Merdasous 8% - also quite good, slight hint of chocolate - enjoyed it with the burger & fries (still the best burger around - no ketchup, thanks). Then a Chimay (it's on tap! how can you resist?) - and finished up with somebody's "White Sage" beer - delicious! actually brewed with white sage - it should be the official beer of the Santa Monicas since it smells like the chaparal after it rains....so tasty but man that combo of strong beers is hurting this morning! Chimay on tap... hmmm, do they agitate the keg to incorporate the yeast sediment, or is that all blown out in the first few pours? Part of the appeal of Chimay for me is the yeast.
You know what? I should investigate this myself.... :-) Posted by El Jefe on 06/17/04

Certainly a good turn.
About a month ago, I was out with buddies, wives and girlfriends for a dinner/drinkin/dancin night and knew my fizzy-beer buddies would try to make me exceed a reputed 2-beer limit, so I used preemptive strategy and bought the first round...of Black & Tans, which we stuck with all night. Worked out well, and they liked 'em.
Friday, at a beer-tasting party, one of them mentioned that now he orders black-n-tans or Guiness at bars with his work buddies, because "it's like a meal in a glass". (Reminded me of an ad campaign, I think.) Mission 1, accomplished.

I love hearing people say "Oh no, I don't like Guinness, it's too thick." I then ask if they've ever tried it. "No, but it just looks thick..." Then they sip the tasty brew, and most often come away saying "wow, that's not nearly what I thought it would be..." followed often by "that's pretty good." OK, sometimes they hand it back and cringe, and sometimes they like it so much that they run away with my beer and I have to go get another. I am an ambassador for the nation of Guinness. Guinness is brewed multiple places in the world now, and I'm not sure where the Guinness we drink here is brewed...could just be that transport and storage makes it less yummy.
Oh yeah, speaking of Guinness brewery, it reminds me of a story:
An Accident at the Guinness Brewery Mary O'Malley is home making dinner, as usual, when Patrick Finnegan arrives at her door. "Mary, may I come in?" he asks. "I've sometin' to tell ya."
"Of course you can come in, you're always welcome, Patrick. But where's me husband?"
"That's what I'm here to be tellin' ya, Mary. There was an accident down at the Guinness brewery..."
"Oh, God no!" cries Mary. "Please don't tell me..."
"I must, Mary. Your husband Shamus is dead and gone. I'm sorry."
Finally, she looked up at Patrick. "How did it happen, Patrick?"
"It was terrible, Mary. He fell into a vat of Guinness Stout and drowned."
"Oh dear Jesus! But you must tell me true, Patrick. Did he go quickly?"
"Well, I'm afraid no Mary, ... they say he got out three times to pee."

New "Beer School" in San Diego County:
Stone plans $10 million brewery in Escondido By David Washburn UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER June 22, 2004
Stone Brewing Co. announced plans yesterday to build a $10 million brewery in Escondido's new business park.
The 50,000-square-foot facility, scheduled to open late next year in the Escondido Research and Technology Center, will make it possible for the brewery to produce six times as much beer as it does now, said Stone co-founder and CEO Greg Koch.
Known for its Arrogant Bastard Ale, Stone is the largest brewery in San Diego with an output of 34,000 barrels a year. With its new facility, the company will have the capacity for more than 200,000 barrels a year.
But Koch, who announced the company's plans at a news conference with Escondido city leaders, said he is in no rush to meet that goal.
"Growing to 200,000 is not important," he said. "Continuing to brew beer that meets our standards is what dictates the growth."
Koch also wants the brewery to be more accessible to beer lovers. The current San Marcos location is only open to the public for a few hours on the weekends, and visitors must dodge forklifts on their tours.
The new brewery will offer tours and tastings six days a week and may also serve food.
"We are expecting to become a leading tourist destination in North County," Koch said.

Along with all the equipment.
Okay, three things:
1) who's gonna step up and go hardcore with the homebrewing? 2) will another brewer locate in San Marcos? 3) don't sweat it...Stone's transferring operations to all new equipment when they move, so there's no downtime.

- Re: Best Beer V
Last night I had a "Barley Wine Style" ale from Avery Brewing, Boulder, Colorado called Hog Heaven Barley Wine. It comes in at 9.2% ABV. The head was off-white, and very lacy and pronounced for a barley wine. While the label says it has 100+ IBU, it was mostly in the nose and on the front of the sip, with no follow-through or lasting hop impression to balance out the very sweet, malty, somewhat raisin-like taste of the deep amber liquid. The sweetness masked the alcohol taste, and really made this all too drinkable, as I polished off the 22oz bottle in about 10 minutes. I really think they mislabled this beer. It has more character of a rich amber ale with a muthafukka of a punch than a classic barleywine, but I'll give it a big thumbs up for a fun, drinkable brew.
I got it at the liquor store in Lake Forest at Lake Forest and Dimension...it's the place that still hase bottles of Vertical Epic chilling in the cooler. :-) Posted by El Jefe on 06/24/04

Sounds like a trade is in order....oh wait, I can get the Imperial Stout anytime I want from Hollingshead's or from the store right down the street from Inkpad's office. I love Stone Brews....I just really really do. My second beer of the night last night was a Stone Smoked Porter. A very very unique tasting Porter, much lighter tasting than most handcrafted porters, but still with a very nice balanced flavor and just a little bit of that Stone hopped finish. I knew it was my last beer of the night, so I took my time with it. My last few sips were at room temp, and it really brought out the roasted malt taste, and got rid of some of the carbonation, making the brew even smoother going down. Very very nice. - Re: Best Beer V
I picked up a whole case of Imperial Stout, and I'm happy to trade some Vertical Epic, or some Old Guardian for a couple bottles of it. Not that it isn't a good solid brew, but I honestly wasn't blown away like I thought I'd be.
A deep rich color, and deep brown head, but the head was a bit shorter lived than I'd like, and the brew seemed a bit flat as served at 55(ish) degrees, instead of rich and creamy in its carbonation.
The nose was perfect... bitter chocolate, ripe berries, a touch of coffe/roasted malt, anise, and hops. Smooth mouth feel, but not as heavy and thick as d expected, but still very very nice. In tasting the brew, I was disappointed that the subtle anise, berry and alcohol tones were eclipsed by the hop taste, that, while not unpleasant, masked some of the real genius behind this brew. I think letting this one lay down for a year or so could do it some good. Posted by El Jefe on 07/08/04

I may have to change my handle to BevMoHo at this point. Dropped by the holy shrine (Beverages and More in Irvine) this evening with EzyRider2, so now I'm prepared for whatever malted mood overcomes me. Current inventory:- Deschutes Black Butte Porter (tonight's first indulgence, mmm...mmm...good)
- Deschutes Obsidian Stout (will sample my 1st one tomorrow)
- Stone Pale Ale (a great everyday brew)
- Stone IPA (for those days I'm feelin' hoppy)
- Celebrator Doppelbock (still the most 'gasmic of the bunch)
- Spaten Optimator (need to compare to Celebrator -- review to come)
- Paulander Salvator Doppelbock (another to compare to the Celebrator)
- Pete's Wicked Ale (not up to the Stone Pale Ale level, but a classic)
- Pete's Strawberry Blond (keeping it around cuz the chicks seem to like it.)
- Redhook ESB (another good one, but overshadowed by other stand-outs)
- Blue Moon Belgian White (just okay, bought it when reminiscing about the old Blue Moon -- pre Coors days)
- Sierra Nevada Pale Ale ($20 bucks/case@Costco! How can ya pass it up???)
- Sierra Nevada Summerfest (Damn good lager; also @Costco for $20/case!)
- Orangboom (tried it, didn't like it; who wants it??)
- Belgian #1 - Piraat (dessert in a glass!)
- Belgian #2 - Bornem Double (need to try it)
- Belgian #3 - Bornem Triple (need to try it)
- Belgian #4 - Bruegel (need to try it)
- Belgian #5 - Gulden Draak (need to try it)
- Belgian #6 - Augustijn Trippel (need to... whoops, it's gone now.... smoooooth!)
- Pacifico (with chips and guacamole on a blazing hot day, okay???!!)
So, now we need 59 more... Posted by VLander on 07/12/04

V-Man, that was pretty classic bumping into each other on the German import aisle!
Tried both the Moylan's I picked up, highly recommended. The Irish Red was all that (and more) and the Kilt Lifter was perhaps the best beer I have tasted in a long time. Good find along the lines of Stone.
thinking of a having a tasting party with the rest of the cache.....you in? Posted by EzyRider2 riding a full pint glass from arrogant bastard land on 07/12/04

I'm all over an inventory analysis symposium (i.e. - tasting party). If this week, could it be held at Chez Boba's Liquid Lounge? (i.e. - our pool and spa area). Reason being: I'm watching the kiddos while me SO visits her mom in the hospital.
Let me know; I'll try to get Tumbleweed and a few other 949 neighbors to join... Posted by VLander on 07/13/04

VL, very good advancement on your journey. Young one, keep up the study and when you can snatch the pebbles from my hand...
GCBY.....I noticed no Mexican crap in that load and a definate up in Belgian beers. Very impressive.
Tonight is an Old Speckled Hen clone. New Castle without the dark and with a bit more hop bite. Homebrewed of course. For you beer drinkers, the ride and benefit for Switchback Cyclery (Tim's cancer) and Tani at the Path will be August 8th. I will provide beer for free (donate to the cause or I will have my big dog lick you to death).
Got beer?

I think this is, like, uh, like, totally, you know, like so number 228, know what I'm sayin'?
I had a Pete's Wicked Ale last night and was reminded what a bummer it has become. Not bad, not stanky, not great. Used to be great back when mah pappy done drank it. Posted by EBasil riding a Manitou HT from San Diego on 07/09/04

Okay, I think you need to join our new advocacy club. It's name is Gravity Sucks.
Sorry to hear, bro.
Vitamin V, vitamin T and a lime will make it all better. Once you start to crap soft, ease up on the beer and pop more Vicoden.
You'll be so stoned off of the V that you won't know taste anyhow. Go cheap my man. A V and 3 beers is equal to a solid night at the Kitchen Club with after hours drinks. Posted by GC on 07/13/04

Sounds like I need to head to his house soon...not now though, a 502 wouldn't be a good idea. Wow, these Imperial Stouts pack a punch. Between 2 of those and 3 Beck's, I'm feeling just fine... Posted by El Jefe on 07/14/04

Beck's adhere's to the Rheinheitsgebot, and is a solid German Lager. I stand by my Beck's decision. Sure, I'd rather have a Stone, but if I'm drinking all night, it's a much better option than a Coor's Light, Bud whatever, or Miller Genuine Lite.... Posted by El Jefe on 07/14/04

Don't backtrack, Jiffy. Piss is piss. What about Stella or Urquell? Becks? Are you sure you weren't down to your last $5.00?
I had their Oktoberfest and it took over two years for it to be drinkable and I only had a sixer.

OK, let's not factor in the Oktoberfest shiite... Pilsner Urquell would have been nice, but GRide was kind enough to bring a sixer of Beck's over to my place as we kicked back and played some guitar. I do enjoy the Pilsner Urquell and Stella Artois more than Beck's, but it's far from pisswater....ok, not THAT far, but it ain't bad in a pinch. Posted by El Jefe on 07/14/04

For a lager, I'd vote for a NZ Steinlager over a Beck's. But, since it was brought over, you can't let it go to waste, and you have to make room for other beer.. Posted by Schecky on 07/14/04

- Re: Best Beer V
Thank you for understanding. I'm not a huge fan of Steinlager, or really any of the brews from down under. I'd say of the lighter brews, I'd say Pilsner Urquell is tops. I could drink it for days....oh wait, I have...... anyway, we're getting close to 300. Your turn. Posted by El Jefe on 07/14/04

Beck's Oktoberfest is miserable. If you have two years to spare, by all means buy a sixer (no more). I think there is still one or two sitting in the back of the beer fridge someplace.

Stick to the Beck's Dark. That is pretty tasty stuff, and is easy to find. Not of a fan of the other Beck's offerings. Posted by EzyRider2 riding a spot from da beach on 07/14/04
