 Best Beer Joints
Alright, the beer thread got me thinking.

What are your favorite and/or best beer establishments based upon quality of beer served, number of taps or beer rotation in your local area?

My top few:
Hollingshead
Jagerhouse
Hero's
Phoenix Club
Tustin Brewery
JT Schmidt's
Goathill (but hate the crowd)

Lucky Baldwins is my new favorite. Too bad they took off the Het Keppital for the Christmas brews though.

Yeah, too bad. I've never been a big fan of Christmas brews. Bring back the Belgians, dammit!

Kelly McCues.El Jefe knows how to pour a Guinness, better than any Hennesys. It may be the clean tap. They taste better ther. Does Jefe fondle the tap?

The open mike was hilarious at Patsy's . But the Guinness is better up the road.

I get in trouble all the time for pouring Guinness the right way....turns out it isn't time efficient to make a Guinness pour last 5 minutes. Oh well, tough sh!t. Patsy's...man, what a dive, but a good time. I've been in a couple fights there, but that's no fun anymore ever since people start pulling knives and stuff.

            To ArrKelly - Agreed

To El Jefe - Agreed and agreed.

There IS a special El Jefe fondling of a Guinness that makes it better.

This is both NBR and NBR, but since you've done some MMA stuff, I thought you might find this story entertaining.

            From another board:
            Shamrock vs. The Knifer
I remember hearing a story about a real-life situation that Frank Shamrock was involved in. I think it took place in a Home Depot parking lot.

Someone apparently cut Shamrock (and other people) off in line (I know---not exactly a bright individual involved here) and Shamrock addressed his rudeness in the parking lot. The guy apparently did something really intelligent like trying to grab or punch Shamrock, and the results were predictable: Shamrock put him down almost instantly with a couple of basic boxing or Muay Thai strikes.

            Here's where it gets interesting---the guy pulled a fixed-blade.

Shamrock commented that, seeing the blade in his opponent's hand, he then "did what all good fighters do" and ran. He went back into the Home Depot and waited the situation out, then got to his car and left the scene. I don't know if the police were ever called or not---I can see where someone like Shamrock would not want them involved unless it was absolutely necessary (for liability reasons).

The point of the story is not to argue how Shamrock could have magically disarmed his opponent or how UFC/MMA fighters may or may not train with weapons and "dirty" techniques---the point is that a man who by any standard is one of the most well-conditioned contact sports athletes in the world (and certainly among the best unarmed combatants in the world) felt that his best option for going unarmed against an idiot with a knife was to run for it.

Good call by him. St Patrick's Day 03, there was a racially motivated incident (basically a couple skinheads jumped a black guy) and I jumped in to pull the skinhead a$$hole off this guy who was basically being lynched.

I grabbed him from behind, and as I spun the guy around I saw what I thought was a punch being thrown at me. I dodged it by only a couple inches thinking it was odd that a guy would try to throw a body blow as his first punch. The guy paused, shocked that another white guy would not support his efforts of the "ethnic cleansing" of Kelly McCue"s. His pause was all I needed and I lunged at the guy, got him in a clinch, spun him and started roling him toward the door.

Halfway through my lunging, spinning, clinching etc... it registered with me that his fist had something in it and that it was very sharp. The guy had a 4" switchblade. Well it was too late to let go of him now, so I just kept going and used his head as a battering ram to open the door. Still shocked that I wasn't supporting his white power ideals, and seeing that 5 large black men were following me outside while his other white power skinhead dork friends were scampering for the parking lot, he put the blade away and made haste to his truck. What a dumbass.

Had I known the guy had a knife, I probably would have handled it differently. I've never been too shaken after a brawl, but that sure sent a couple shivers through me...nothing a shot of Jager and a couple pints of Guinness couldn't cure, but still....

Patsy's - Crown Valley and Golden Lantern? If so, watched the bartender drive a seriously impaired guy home in his own car. Gotta love that.

I really like Hennesey's Dana Point down the street. Comfortable place, cool people, good food. Also Turk's is a great place, (even further down the street in the Harbor)but just to drink. Bottoms up!

Hennesey's is a great place! The outside area is very nice with the fire pits and all. Tons of chicks too. Yes that is the patsy's i was talking about. I know right where turks is but have never been in there. Dude, it sounds like you have good taste in watering holes.

There is at least one place I don't have good taste - Mug's Away!! (not in your local tourist guide) What a great dive. The bands are usually pretty entertaining, most of the time for the wrong reasons :)

Of course, don't forget Kelly McCues. Any place that has a pyscho MTB guy running the taps is O.K. by me!

Well, I'm off to Seattle till after New Year's. Aaaaaah, you can get killer brewskis at any mom and pop. And the pubs - dear lord I am getting weepy just thinking about it. Bringing the bike too.......

This is not a local establishment, but if you are EVER in San Luis Obispo, you must go here. Original Spikes

I visited SLO this past weekend. This pub called Spikes is the best place on earth. ;) I have my very on mug hanging on the wall as well as 10 plaques for excellence in beer drinking. I lived there for a while, and spent a lot of time drinking in this place.

If you are ever in slo, go here, you will have a blast, trust me... They have so many beers on tap, all quality brews, barley wines, seasonal brews, blah blah blah. Check it out for yourself.

I had a mug on the wall at The Rose & Crown in SLO and then the bastards picked up their money and ran.

I was banned for life from the Pozo Saloon, but those drunks will never recognize me now.

Hey, alright. Did you graduate from Cal Poly? Year? I graduated in 98 with a B.S. in Food Science.

You must of done something pretty bad to be banned for life.

Did you ever go into Spikes? McCarthys? (they had the best well drinks in town)

South Coast in OB, one of Endo's fave's too if I recall correctly.

Kraken in Cardiff. Better ride your hog or play guitar though.

Both have great atmosphere and are right on the beach. South Coast has great beer and killer food.

I was wondering if they were still around.

Used to get a breakfast sandwich every morning on the way to the shipyard in 74 and stop on the way home for a brew.

      Great place!!
