Buy Ned Overend's book, Mountain Bike Like A Champion by Ned Overend and Ed Pavelka, and read it carefully. That will get you started.

ride with people faster than you. rest alot. and repeat. drink alot stretch alot strenghten for balance and good form. rest some more. forget the books you'll end up over-training you are the coach. get to bed early.
