Cherry Canyon - La Canada

You can access these fire roads and trails from the top of Hampstead Rd. off Chevy Chase but a better access is the top of Forest Hill Dr. From the entrance to Descanso Gardens go east and take your first right. Then take your first left. Then take your first right on Forest Hill Dr. Thomas Guide page: 535

  1. Banner's the Man - Great job Banner on the trail on the east side. That trail had a lot of damage and you fixed it!!! My son and I un-clogged the drain pipe at the bottom canyon near Hamstead. Big fallen tree diverting the water-should be fine now. Anyone riding this area-thank Banner for his hard work.

  2. There is a holy shit trail, a very steep rocky trail that starts by the south end, go take the trail in front of the bench by the towers. follow that trail and thentake the owl connector (slight right) and then keep riding, make a right at the next junction and HOLD ON!

rode to the Descanso lateral trail which takes you back to the gardens. some steep switchbacks near the bottom.
a fun riding alternative now that the forest is closed.

  4. Cherry Canyon - I went for the very first time to this trail this morning. From the Descanso Gardens I made a right on the second street and then a left on the first street which was Forest Hill Dr. We road our bikes up on Forest Hill Dr., which was a fairly steep climb. Once we passed the gates there was a sign that gave us 2 options of either going to the right (which is a single track) or to the left (which was a fire road). We went to the right and took the single track. The single track portion of the trail was fairly in good condition. It was a fun little trail with some ups and downs and it had a couple of switch backs. Overall I think this is a good trail to take anyone. The more experienced rider can ride the single track and the novice can ride the fire road. The cool thing is the single track meets up the fire road. Also you can pretty much see both trails at all time.

  5. Cherry Canyon Loop - There are multiple fire roads and nice single tracks which criss cross in various places which can get confusing but everything is close by so you can't get too lost. For starters you can take the first single track you come to 100 yards on the right from the top of Forest Hill Dr., then take the fire road up from there. Or from the top of Forest Hill Dr. take the second single track you come to about 1/2 mile up the fire road on the left.
One of the best single tracks is just below the fire tower off the short fire road that goes down toward the east and just before the gate turn left on a trail that is not obvious but starts near a bench seat. At the first singletrack intersection, go right and at later singletrack intersections go left towards the west.
If you start from the gate on Hampstead Rd. there is a fun single track that goes off to the left from about 1/2 mile up the fire road and which takes you right back to the gate. There is another one which goes off to the right about 100 yards up the fire road from the one which goes left.
All the good singletracks can be ridden in either direction. There are only a couple short singletracks which are too deteriorated for most riders to enjoy.
