 Singlespeed survey
1. What gear ratio do you run?
2. How light is your SS?
3. Fully rigid or front fork?
4. What kind of rides do you typically do on a SS? Distance, terrain, etc.

I got the road bike, HT, and FS bikes covered. I'm just wondering if there's more fun to be had with a SS and if so what kind?

    1) I'm a pussy... 30:19 or 30:18... 41 or 43 inch gear.

    2) No idea.

    3) I'm running a suspension fork... but I think it's irrelevant to "singlespeed".

    4) At the moment, everything.

    5) Yes, more fun! Just do it!

      1) Your a Borg, not a pussy but if you insist...
      2) Yea right, try again like you don't know
      3) You mean which fork this week
      4) Except xc races wouldn't do that would ya?
      5) Just another pathetic attempt to not fit in by standing
      out.

Wow. A little hostility between Crossmax and Aosty?

    1. 34:20

    2. dunno exactly, but a lot lighter than it was with all the unnecessary extra gears. prolly around 23 or so.

    3. I tried putting the original rigid fork back on and I forgot how brutal that can be. I guess I'm a pussy in this department - I gotta have suspension on the front. I can't say I'm too old though, cause a lot of the rigid singlespeeders are older than me.

    4. same as I do on my geared FS, only faster usually, especially on the uphills

    5. and the question you didn't ask . . . why ride a singlespeed? (a) why not? - it's a bike (b) because it's there (c) because it's challenging (d) because it's fun to ride a light and nimble steed (e) because it makes you a better rider (f) because it's worth all the hard work just to hear someone say "Wow, you did that on a singlespeed?" (g) because it's simple, and (h) because I can!

The SS trail / dirt jump bike I'm building is 36:18 with a 5" QR20 zoke in front. I can't wait to drop ledges and descend trails in complete silence. 2:1 gearing will be fine for 98% of the stuff I do, including any Aliso climbs.

      Bahhhh HaaaaaaaHaaaaa
I love El Jefe's humor! "... 2:1 gearing will be fine for 98% of the stuff I do, including Aliso climbs."

      That's funny!

        You're right, more like 99%. :-D

BTW- It's built....ugly, but it's now on the dirt.

    1. Weak azz 29:18
    2. ~22 lbs
    3. Almost a susp fork (70mm)
    4. Short rides, mostly ElP at night.

The differences in riding b/w my SS and FR-FS are almost laughable.

    1. 32:18
    2. 23 lbs
    3. Suspension, rigid took all the fun out of riding it.
    4. Same as my geared bike.

    1. 36 / 18
    2. 23 to 24 lbs
    3. 80mm, but contemplating a rigid
    4. Same rides as my other bikes

For me, the SS makes for a better workout when I'm short on time. The Quiet descents are also fun.

    1. 32:18
    2. 22.5 lbs
    3. Suspension fork...but I'm about to try rigid.
    4. I pretty much do everything on my 1x1 that I do on my other bikes: distance, techie descents/ascents, you name it...except stuff like Bootleg Cyn DH's. I just don't want to beat the crap out of it.
    5. Riding a 1x1 is like going back to your childhood. I ride up the hills like an idiot, not realizing how much pain it's gonna be. I spin like an idiot on the descents trying to take advantage of all the momentum I can build. And finally, I smile like an idiot at every person that asks, "Why singlespeed?"

I guess I'm a bloomin' idiot that likes to have fun.
