A rattle snake struck at me!
I was on Dirt Mulholland this afternoon, just before the Hub. I was riding along when suddenly I heard a rattling. I didn't have time to react or see where it was coming from when suddenly a rattle snake that was near the side of the trail, struck at me as I rode by! I almost crapped in my pants and swerved to avoid him. I hit the brakes a safe distance away and turned around and saw one BIG rattlesnake heading back into the brush, tail still rattling a little.

If i had been riding a few feet closer to the side of the trail, he might've nailed me. I can still see the image of him striking at me. Just like in the nature shows. That was my adrenaline rush for the day!

the snakes are probably pretty ornery having to come out of hibernation so early in the year...

Was it just before the climb to the hub? I saw one crossing the road there yesterday. Where did it try to strike you?

This was on the other side of the Hub from the climbing, going east. it was one or two turns before the Hub. I haven't seen a lot of rattle snakes but to me it looked pretty big.

Snake Safety Tip #1 ( Taken from the ancient bible of MTB survival skills ): Coat your legs with a nice thick layer of peanut butter from the knee down. It'll show them pesky rattlers who's boss when they get a mouth full of PB.
Oh yea..that's the REAL reason cyclists shave their legs. Hope that helps.

There was a small rattler on fire road #30 about 200 yards south of Mulholland yesterday at about 11 AM. Just sunning. A biker was monitoring the snake and some hikers were freaking out. That's odd that a rattler will try to strike from the side of the road. Never happened to me. I leave them alone and they leave me alone.

Reminds me of one really pissed off one I encountered in Chesebro last year. I recall we had a gloomy and cool stretch in late May/ early June and when things finally warmed up the snakes came out. Me and a buddy stopped about 30 feet away from a 4 foot rattler which for no reason whatsoever started rattling big time, twisting and lunging at nothing. I thought there might have been some animal nearby but there wasn't any. That thing just kind of had an attitude. I hate snakes.
