 The Gnar List
This past weekend got me thinking about The Gnar List (legal trails). Here's a stab, not in any order:

1. Flying Monkey (Virgin, UT)
2. Grafton Mesa (Springdale, UT)
3. Holbert (Phoenix, AZ)
4. Mormon Trail Northface (Phoenix, AZ)
5. Tunnel Trail (Santa Barbara, CA)
6. Cold Springs Trail (Santa Barbara, CA)
7. Ginger (Boulder City, NV)
8. Portal Trail (Moab, UT)
9. Milagrosa (Tucson, AZ)
10. Kiwanis Trail (Phoenix, AZ)
11. Snakeback (Boulder City, NV)

Where else?

Diablito - What exactly is the status of Woolsey Canyon? Legal or no? I heard the natives mess with your car if you park near the upper driveway area. Def has some gnar stuff these days!

After my next to complete shut down, I would have to say Flying Monkey is the most gnar trail I've ever been on. Grafton, Holbert, Mormon, Tunnel etc...have nothing on the Monkey.

Non Socal trails would have to include:
    The Gimp(Nelson, BC)
    Karpiel(Northstar)
    Clown Shoes(Whistler)

If there is one thing I learned about ya, is preserverance! Waddage to huckage in the same day. I couldnt of been more proud of ya, and happy to see the weekend come to a close on a high note. :)

I would argue, for now anyways, that Grafton Mesa is harder than the Monkey.

The Monkey had its moments of just pure gnar RIGHT next to cliff exposure, but in-between all that it was mellow.

Grafton had a just section after section, all the way down of just jack-hamnmer. Which gets tiresome.

The jury is out, anybody have an opinion on this. Grafton v.s. Flying Monkey?

Are you sure Grafton is easier than the Monkey?

That is sort of like the Tunnel vs. Cold Springs arguement. Cold Springs has harder sections & more trail, but Tunnel is more relentless. Usually, whichever trail you've ridden last is the one you like the best.

I think the pucker factor on the freakish exposure makes the Monkey harder, or at least more exhausting.

I would say Monkey over Grafton in a minute - easy test - I've ridden Grafton top to bottom, never Monkey - the rock garden section on Monkey is sick, much harder than Grafton & the three big "stunts" on Monkey are tougher, with much bigger consequences for mistakes...exposure!

Yeah I agree about the comparison, but I think neither Tunnel, Cold Springs, Monkey or Grafton are as challenging as the steeps on Troy Lee Trail. Some people call this trail Diablo, which runs next to Fall Zones off of Blackstar / Skyline Drive. As far as I know, it's a legal trail.

If I include trails outside the US, I'd have to say that Monster beats all you've ever seen. It's a muthafocka....just ask Dusty! :-)

I agree with Lag. I think Grafton is harder because it wears you out, then once you get worn out you start making dumb mistakes.

        Monkey was cake. ;)

Not really apples to apples (different terrain), but I would say that they are harder than Ginger. I think it really depends on how one feels on a given day. I was feeling so-so on Grafton day, then felt totally focused on Monkey day. Aside from the steep roller on top of Ginger I think it's reasonably cleanable. Although that slide into the slot canyon is hairy as he//.

I agree - Monkey with a SERIOUS hangover is not the way to start the day! (although adrenalin sure clears the cobwebs fast!)

Grafton is just so much fun!

                •  Re: The Gnar List
On Monkey You have 'stunt' one, which is that roller with the cliff exposure. Very gnar.

Then you have technical up until that second stunt, which is a slide on that off camber rock.

Then, it is technical, but less than grafton up to a point where it hits a rock, with LOTS of exposure on the right.

Then, you hit that hard turn, and lots of boulders with exposure and that is sick, then it is difficult for about 50 feet, then it is really mellow.

Grafton, is technical the whole way, kind of non-stop.

I guess it is like comparing Stout Beer v.s. an Ale, both are great, both have a kick, one has more flow than the other.

But yes, we didnt link Monkey all the way, and Grafton we did.

We just have to go back and compare the two!

For me at least, Ginger is nothing compared to the Monkey. The Stinky folded like an envelope in BC. Kona's crash replacement policy wasn't what I was expecting. So I went with a Santa Cruz.

    2. Geronimo (Phoenix, AZ)- this trail simply has my number
    3. Amasa Back (Moab, UT)- lots of cute side action
    4. The Whoops (Brentwood, CA)- high rating for injury potential
