 MAX Heart Rate
My max heart rate when I'm running is 206, but I'll usually run a race around 186 avg. During the bike however I'm only about 170. Does this mean I should push harder, or will I never get my bike HR as high as a running heart rate?

I also don't want to burn out for the run (or drop dead)
Any docs, or other well-informed, out there with comments?

your heart rate seems high in general, but as you know, there are significant variations from person to person (dependent on genetics, conditioning, resting heart rate, etc.) in general, the less weight bearing the sport, the lower the heart-rate. so running is more than biking, which is more than swimming, etc.

your drop between running and biking is less than 10 percent, which i think is pretty normal.

Thanks. I am supposed to get VO2 max tested soon. I have read that you can not improve this much beyond 10%, given genetics. Do you agree?

Most estimators just use time for a distance covered running, which is BS because there was a time in my life when I could run 5 minute miles, and now it's much slower, but I doubt that my VO2 Max has changed that much. I can improve on the heart rate, though, it would seem?

you can improve your VO2 with applied, targeted training (i did), and it is generally a good indicator of general fitness. improving beyond 10% will depend on how fit you already are - easy to go improve beyond 10% if you are in lousy shape, but harder if you are already fit.

calculating VO2 by time-for-distance is a bit crude. but the polar fitness test (which supposedly also calculates VO2 max) is also just a rough approximation, and it is easily "fooled" by subjects having a natural overall heart rate range that is relatively high or low .

the most accurate VO2 measurements are done by getting hooked up in a controlled setting, so that your breath composition under stress can be calculated.

Thanks. You seem to be the most informed person I have ever talked to on this subject. The "lab" test did use a mask to measure breathing composition. My AT was much lower than I expected, and only 65% of my Max. I have a lot of work to do and I am now on a training program to see if I can get the numbers to improve.

One concern I have is the training seems way too easy. For instance, I normally ran averaging in the mid 180s HR, and now I am supposed to exercise below my 154 AT. I don't think it's much of a workout and I hit that rate by the time I reach the stop sign at the corner. What do you think? Should I continue to push hard, or follow the program which will supposedly raise my AT and VO2 max?

            Follow the program.

All the scientific mumbo-jumbo wasn't just made up... you don't get your numbers where you want them by "just" working hard... sometimes you need to work on endurance and resting on the bike. It's just as important as the hard efforts.
