Doing AIDSvaccine ride - need road bike
Looking to get a good bike for my ride from Canada to Maine. The last time I bought a bicycle the price wasn't so darn much. Have ridden my current bike into the ground. Anyone have a really good deal. The best I have found is a Trek 1000 for $599 at a bicycle shop. Used is fine if I can find a really good deal. I am trying to budget my money (am a medical transcriptionist and support my six member family with this income) to afford bike, plane ticket and whatever else is needed to do this ride.

Hello Jon. I am a Mountain XC racer who has recently taken up road riding (Time Trials) to build up my speed and endurance for the dirt trails. I have researched the hell out of every bike out there that is a "Triathlon" or "Time Trials" bike, and I have found that finding a gem on Ebay is the best bet. I recently purchased a 2001 Cannondale R700 Time Trials bike for less than $560 bucks. There are many, many road bikes on Ebay and it is a 100 percent probability that you can find a $1,700 road bike for $500 to $600 big ones.

$599 is full retail on a low end bike. I'd personally try to grab something at least a step or two up. The worst thing to happen would be to spend all the time and money on getting there, and then have a problem with your bike (not saying you would, but I'd look for something with 105 components at the minimum). Besides trying to find a good deal on a new or used bike, have you solicited sponsorship support from your local bike shop and other local merchants? Many businesses will give a helping hand financially for a worthy cause (either through discounts, supplies, sometimes even cash) in return for a little advertising .
