 XT M765 disc noise?
Well...I finally said goodbye to the Veebrakian Luddites and got some Deore XT M765 disc brakes. The noise from the metallic pads is driving me crazy! Not the gentle grinding sound under soft braking, but the crying, screaming howl when I really grab 'em. Is it OK to coat the back of each pad with a little silicone to dampen the noise a bit (ala auto disc brakes)?

Also, what are people's opinions of the dual-control levers? There are things I like about them, and things I don't, but so far they're great!

I like the Dual C levers. But anyway, a buddy of mine has XTR brakes and his howl and squeal on long descents and under hard braking. It could be your pads breaking in; you could try to lightly sand the pads, as it has worked for me in the past with Hayes. Good luck.

I thought I'd broken them in - silent and poor braking for the first few miles, then louder and better braking as I wore off the coating. I'll try sanding and maybe switch to the resin pads, and maybe the silicone trick. Thanks for the tip!

Now, now! I didn't throw them in the trash... :) They'll go on my 'commuter' bike when I collect enough parts to build it.

I have Hays bracks that make a lot of noise also on heavy bracking. I work at a hospital and when I leave in the morning I grab an alcohol prep pad to clean the disc. This has worked very well for the noise and stopping power as wel, however I only ride 6 miles home on the street. It works OK off road but I have only tryed this once so far. I think I may also try sanding the pads, but the easy fix for me has been the Isopropyl Alcohol.
