Trail riding frame help

I'm 6' 1", 198 lbs. I broke a Trek fuel and ever since I've been riding a Leader hardtail. I'm about to buy a new suspension frame. I was thinking about getting the Giant Trance, as I can get it for cheep through a hookup. I can't afford a Turner 5spot or an Intense. Has anyone had any experience with the Trance? should I get a Reign instead? The trance is 4" travel and the Regin is 6". I was shootin for 5". What about Ironhorse? I don't have a boutique budget, so I'll probably have to get something mass produced in Taiwan. I ride eveything from cross country to agressive trails. No huge drops, but lots of bashing and smashing, and maybe drops under 2 feet now and then. I was planing on getting a Reba or Pike fork, depending on the frame's travel...any ideas?

Hmm yeah...thought about that...is it wise to get a used frame tho? I mean, how can I tell if the previous owner bashed the hell out of it? (which I plan on doing anyway!) There's only one 5 spot on ebay right now, and it's a gigantic 25" size! I suppose I could just wait and save up...but I'd like it before summer is over!

Try here A lot of bikes for sale at MTBR as well. Usually quite a few 5 spots. Either that, or go for a Heckler, as suggested. If you search the MTBR classifieds, even if you want to buy new parts, you will be able to spec yourself out something pretty decent for around $2,000.

The 5* or a newer (longer travel) Heckler. I had a friend pick one up, fully built but needing a new fork for about a grand.

Thanks guys. I should probably just save up a little more and get a 5 spot since it's what I'd ideally like to have. What is a fair price for a used one (frame only)? What would be the ideal fork travel to match the 5" rear travel? I'm kinda retarded about some of the technology. Is it ok to run a 115mm fork (about 4.5") with a 5" rear? Or should the fork have atleast as much travel as the rear? I have a fealing some of you are gonna hate me for having a Turner without the skills to back it up. I saw a fat guy poking around on an Ellsworth last weekend, but hey if he can afford it...

It really depends on the condition of the frame. I've seen complete bikes for a bit over $2,000, or frame only for about $1,200. Those prices would be a great deal, assuming the condition is good. You really should run a 130mm fork on it. Get a Marzocchi or a Fox. The offerings from Rockshox and Manitou can not match up. The only reason you get hated around here is if you spout off like an idiot about stupid stuff. So far, doesn't seem like you've done that.

Again, what he said. If you find a Manitou at a great price, still turn tail and run. I blew three Blacks in one season. POS factor is high. As for the Fox, have the spring rate on the Vanilla set for you (new spring), or if you buy the Talas be prepared to have the seals done right away. If you are buying a complete bike look for the sturdiest stuff around (Thomson, King, Race Face etc). Many times the components are much cheaper when purchase as a complete bike, especially when used. Good luck.

I already have a thomson post and stem (and am ready to buy another thomson post if the diameter is wrong for the new frame). Avid Juicy 7's. For derailleurs, I'm running a SRAM X.0 in the back and an XT in front with X.9 trigger shifters, tho I want to check out the new X.0's (probably way more than I need). And I've got XT M752 cranks (which I will probably replace). I was planning on just moving all these parts over to the new frame. I'm currently running a Manitou Black. And yeah...it's not going onto the new bike. I've added the TPC+ damping, Evil Genious seals, a heavier spring...I'm done messing with it. You blew 3 of them!? I'm not sure I would have bought a 3rd one after the 2nd failure, but I'm guessing these were warranty replacements? What about the Pike from Rock Shox? I'd need a new front hub for the thru-axle...is that a crappy fork too? Seems like everyone is runing Fox now. Is there any fork that doesn't need work done on it right away (other than set up for my weight/style)?

If you want a fork that doesn't need work done on it right away, get a Marzocchi. Preferably a coil version.

... though at almost 200 lbs., he may need to get firmer springs installed or raise the oil level, as I've found Marzocchi coil forks (Z1 and Super T) to bottom easily straight outta the box.
