Best Tire combo for so. orange county trails?
I am about to replace my stock tires on my Enduro, and was wondering what all you guys who know the trails around here recommend. RDC is letting me try out an old Mutano Raptor 2.4 upfront, with a Velociraptor 2.1 (i think thats what it is) on the rear. I have yet to ride on the dirt with these things.

Anyhow, I know lots of you guys have waaaaay more experience than I do out on the dirt, so, I ask, what tire combo have you found to be the best for our conditions. I am somewhat aggressive on the downhill portions of these rides, so, I don't want anything less than a 2.3 inch tire really. I usually ride Aliso/Woods, El Moro, Holy Jim, Whiting, Santiago Truck Trail, and San Juan. Thanks.

I live/ride in Ventura County and Northern LA county - mainly hardpack. I've tried Michelin Wildgripper Lites, IRC Mythos, and Continental Atlantas. However, the best I've found are the Panaracer Fire XC Pros. They cost about $22 each at JensonUSA. They last, hook up really well. Some complain they load up with mud, but that's not much a concern in So Cal. If you buy them, make sure they have the 127 tpi casing (made in Japan). There is an "OEM" version of of the Fire XC Pros with 66 tpi casing (made in Taiwan) that seems to get bad reviews. Even the Panaracer website notes the difference in tires. I believe they come in a 2.4. I ride the 2.1.

Check out www.mtbr.com for rider reviews of tires.

Since the Fires don't work well with Stans please delete the previous post. Thank you. ;)

Guess what Steven, I just bought another tire last night. Kenda Kenetics 2.3 stick-e for the rear. I have to vote for a tire with "super tacky" or "stick-e" rubber, they just flat out hook up and stick like glue compared to most others. Since you don't ride a ton of miles, you shouldn't wear them out too quickly. Got the Kenda at Supergo for $20, we'll see how it works this weekend. I don't think you'll like that front Mutanoraptor very much, but the velociraptor has some of the best traction for climbing in any tire I've used. I'll let you try out my 2.4 Panaracer FR in the front if you want, wouldn't recommend it as a rear tire though.

I've heard people talk about the Fire's before, mixed reviews though. I've been doing a bit of reading on mtbr.com and trying to find peoples reviews who live in our area, (would seem to be most relevant).

Arrkelly, I don't care about weight that much, if a heavier tire that grips better is the call, then thats what is important to me.

Steven, I was thinking of checking out those Kenda's, I may go hit superBLO on Saturday mornin'. We are riding San Juan on Sunday, right Jackson?!?!

If you don't care about weight get something by maxis or the panaracer fire 2.4

Just like RDC I have new rubber. Kenda blue groove 2.35 with stick-e rubber for the front. the rear tire is a specialized enduro pro 2.2 ...the new kind with real sticky rubber. Only one ride so far but they did the trick on one of the sketchier trails in aliso. We will see how long the tread lasts...

Yes, that tire stopped you right before the nasty drop, and allowed you to sit an contemplate it for about 5 minutes.... ;-)

I'm going to jump in and say the Maxxis Larsen Mimo 2.0 is the best rear tire ever made. Sure a 2.35 or even a 2.2 would be nice, but for trail riding, it's just fine.

5 SECONDS, maybe. At least I did the drop with whitnesses. For all we know you walked the whole thing.

Yeah, like I could walk down fast enough to have to wait for you for 5 minutes.... uh huh... oh yeah, don't you mean "witnesses?" ;-)

Thanks everyone, so, sounds like the most economical/best thing to do would be to "borrow" RDC's 2.4 Panny and buy a new rear tire.

No freebies this time boy, I like that 2.4 Panny so you'll have to buy your own if you like it.
