 Kickstand help
I recently bought a mountain bike. I plan to do some trails eventually, but for now I'm riding in a 42-mile race across NYC. My bike does not have a kickstand, but I bought one to add on. I figure that it will get in the way for trails. But will it get in the way for the streetriding? Or is the kickstand pretty much not neccesary? Thanks.

Good call buying the kickstand. You will absolutely want one for street riding and for dirt. You might want to consider getting a second one for the other side of the bike. That way, no matter which side of the bike that you happen to get off of, you will have a kickstand at the ready.

Kickstands are key for protecting your bike from damage while setting it on the ground. Without it, you could possibly damage the rear derailleur, the pedals, the ends of the handlebars, the seat, and even the brake levers. People will try to tell you otherwise on this site, but don't listen to them, they don't know what they are talking about.

    Kickstands rule.

If you want to be really cool, you can get 4 kickstands like me. That way, you can raise your bike completely off the ground when you stop. It's great for changing flats, or truing your wheel too.

A kickstand? Cities have walls and posts and big glass storefront windows, trails have trees and rocks, they are all there just to lean your bike up against. You don't need a kickstand unless you are riding in big groups when all the good places to lean your bike against are taken.

i put a new banshee kickstand on my new banshee scream. man that kick stand is so over built it can handle anything i throw at it. the mounting hardware is burly sealed bearings at the pivot and a nice little rubber foot at the end. it's really great design. so when i'm

    Got me all excited!

I'm going stop on the way home from work for a kickstand, reflectors, spoke weenie, handlebar tassles and a mirror.

I'll be all set for tomorrow.

I found you can use a kickstand as a pivot to get around those tight switchbacks.

If you're going with a kicker, get the carbon fiber shaft one with the mounting titanium hardware.Don't buy the heavy steel ones though. The tensile strength of the carbon fiber far surpasses the steel.

Thanks for all the kickstand help. My daughter and I were having this debate. She feels you don't need one, and now and then, I really kind of wish I had one. Being a newbie, this is helpful to be able to add words like "kicker" and "carbon fiber shaft w/ titanium hardware" to my vocabulary. Thanks.

This debate has plagued mankind for generations. I hear Bush is now against kickstands after his little fall. While Kerry says kickstands are a "right" for all Americans.
