Don't Give Up On V-Brakes Just Yet
On Friday, in a fit of getting tired of having a hardtail V-braked butt blaster, and awaiting my new-to-me used Heckler frame, I pulled the XT equipped HT parts off and stuck them on my f/s Mongoose.

The Goose' parts will be bolted onto the Santa Cruz and unfortunately, but intentionally, it will end my chapter with hardtails. Farewell HT, your presence in mtb'ing will be immortal but your technology is as outdated as a 1971 Chevrolet Vega.

But after riding the Goose now with V Brakes, shorter fork travel, lighter wheels and cranks, the bike has a quicker response. It also is slimmer (almost 31 pounds) which makes pedaling uphill an ease.
Before, it weighed in at 33 lbs and losing a couple pounds and 20mm of travel didn't do any harm. The V Brakes along with a pr of lightweight Mavic wheels and XT hubs returns me to 1998 when I had a 24 lb. HT but now without the rear harshness.

Don't toss them V Brakes for Disc unnecessarily!

Even before you press send, your posts are more outdated than a hardtail will ever be.

I already have a HT - but it's got disc brakes, because there is not a single good reason not to have them anymore...fool...
