 Indian Canyon
Hi I'm not a mountain biker but from looking at the posts on here I guess you all have ridden in the Mt. Gleason area from time to time so I was wondering if any of you could help me with a question I have. Basically I would like to find out where I was/where I ended up, and I'll tell you as much information as I know. My friends and I were heading up to Nike Base (we came from Placerita Canyon, to Sand Canyon, to another road that I forget its name, and then into the Angeles Forest) and on our way back down we saw the Santa Clara Divide Road and we decided to see where it went. We drove until we found a sign that had mileages on it and it said Mt. Gleason was one way and Indian Canyon was another way, and we took Indian Canyon. At the time it was dark out, rainy, and cloudy/foggy, so we did not (and still don't) know where the heck we were, and we also had not seen any lights since we got on the Divide Rd. We drove for what seemed like a long time on Indian Canyon until the road started dropping down and we could see a light or two poking through the fog. We were actually totally scared cause we had no clue what we were going to find way out wherever we were. But we ended up coming out onto a real paved road and a campsite (that was the end of Indian Canyon). We turned left on that road and passed a few more campsites and then we passed a White Rock Lake, and then we decided to turn around since we didnt know where that road would take us, and we drove back up Indian Canyon and back down the Divide Rd. back to Newhall. So if anybody knows where we were, if you could tell me that would be great!! I'd especially like to know what road/what city/where we were when we came off of Indian Canyon or where White Rock Lake is. Thanks alot for reading this long post!!

Indian Canyon bottoms out on Soledad Canyon Road, Thomas Guide page 4464, B7. If you had kept going on Soledad, you would have hit the east end of Santa Clarita - Soledad goes under the 14 at the east end of town. Pick a clear day next time you go up there, the views are pretty good. Three miles up the Santa Clara Divide Road from Sand Canyon, on the left, is a big yellow gate. That road leads to Magic Mountain (the peak, not the park) which also has great views.

yeah i have ridden Indian Canyon several times. After dropping into the creek area it climbs steeply up a hill to meet with PCT and then descends to Soledad Canyon. I know the area up there pretty well for any of the rides because i liver nearby in Santa Clarita. Feel free to email me.

Thanks guys very much! I have two more questions now though. First one, what is PCT? and second, I think we might have gone to Magic Mountain, because we went exploring again the other night and I think we went through that yellow gate that's 3 miles up the divide road. We came to a pretty open area and there was a chainlink fence and some towers, like water towers or something, not too huge. And there were a couple raods/trails that branched out of that little area, and we started going on one, but it had some steep ups and downs that after going up and down a few of them we decided not to put our Explorer through that anymore, so we turned around and went back up to the water towers and took another trail which looked much nicer but after awhile it got really bad (for a car anyways) but we couldn't back up and turn around, so we had to keep going and after several repetitions of an Our Lady Peace cd, the trail widened out into a paved road, and we ended up at a rock quarry! There were blasting zone signs and stuff. But by then it was well after midnight so we were locked in, so we drove around the quarry for awhile until we found a gate that wasnt locked, so we were able to get out. It was kindof surprising to end up in a rock quarry, and a little eerie being all alone in there. Once we got out, we were right by the 14. So maybe we had been on Magic Mountain at one point during the night, I'm not sure. The views were really cool and it was freezing cold (literally). So if yu guys know where we were that time (which you probly do), I'd love to find out! Thanks again!

PCT is short for Pacific Crest Trail, a hiking trail that runs from southern California to Northern Washington. The trail Jenn went down in her explorer was called 4N06, the route I have on my riding list. How was it Jenn? Is it a good route for mountain biking? Also, just wanted to confrims that the towers and water tanks are at the top of Magic Mountain. Indian Canyon can be reached by going past Magic Mountain on an unpaved route to the right of the white gate near the base of the peak. Any questions, i know the area well.

Thanks Steve! Um, I dont really know what you guys consider a good riding trail, but if I was into riding and stuff, I dont think I would ride it because you can't end up anywhere (because of the quarry at the end of the trail, it would be dangerous in the daytime when they're working and whatnot and they probly wouldnt even let you through) so you'd just have to turn around and ride back and that would kindof suck because it's uphill the whole entire way, and since you already rode down it, it's not even like you'd be seeing new stuff on the way back up, ya know? But it was a cool trip down! All I can say is that there must be a crazy amount of trails out there because every trail we have been on so far has had other trails branching off those ones; each time we've been out we can't keep up with all of them!! Also one more question, do you know what the elevation is at Magic Mountain??

I believe Magic Mountain is about 4800ft, and Bear Divide is about 4400. The point you reached on Soledad is probably about 1800ft. Was there really a blasting zone near Soledad? Is it doable to ride through there?

Doable to ride through the blasting zone and the rock quarry?? Not unless you're planning on riding all the way up and over the mountain in the dark after they're all closed up for the night!
