Sore lower back
When I mountain bike climb for over 45 min my lower back gets sore. I know this could be a combination of factors like; 1. Do some sit-ups. 2. Get out of the saddle and stretch during rides. But what I'm most concerned about is my bike set-up. My Stumpjumper has flat bars and I'm over the bike. I'm wondering if some riser bars might alleviate some soreness. Has anyone had experience with this? Posted by TOK a 42 year old Weekend Warrior riding a Stumpjumper fsr comp xc / FUSO road from Thousand Oaks on 04/19/02

Yes, I've had the same problem. I changed my flat bars to a DH 2.5 rise Answer Pro Taper bar, I shortened my stem from 110 Titec to 75 KORE Elite. And, moved my seat closer to my bars. This all worked wonders. Also helped on the descent. Posted by CrzyRidr3 riding a Giant AC Air from Sherman Oaks on 04/19/02

How did you find the right combination of rise and stem length? Did your bike shop help you, did they let you try some combos, luck, good guess? Posted by TOK a 42 year old Weekend Warrior riding a Stumpjumper fsr comp xc / FUSO road from Thousand Oaks on 04/19/02

TOK- LBS helped alot. I did try some different combo's as well. BTW: Just switched out my wifes headset, stem and bars for the same reasons and she's doing much better... Posted by CrzyRidr3 riding a Giant AC Air from Sherman Oaks on 04/22/02

I find my seat position to be the cure for this. If I have it wrong I can get a sore lower in the first 15 minutes. If I have it right I can ride for hours.
I used to have a short and tall stem and swapped it for a more XC like stem (120mm x 10 deg) this really didn't seem to affect my back. It's all in the seat position. Good luck. Posted by Racercad a 34 year old riding a Cheap Schwinn made expensive from Costa Mesa on 04/22/02

Where is your seat position that works well and where is you seat position that doesn't? Posted by TOK a 42 year old Weekend Warrior riding a Stumpjumper fsr comp xc / FUSO road from Thousand Oaks on 04/22/02

The big change for me was to move it forward and up. I can't really give measurements but what I can say is it seems a little too high, and a little too far forward. One or two centimeters made quite a difference.
I find I have much better control of the bike after getting used to the new position. Including better wheelies.
Sorry I can't be more helpful. Good luck. Posted by Racercad a 34 year old Cross-Country riding a back breaking hardtail schwinn with no pain from Costa Mesa on 04/23/02

Thanks racercad and crzyrdr3 for the helpful hints. I have my bike in the LBS to work out a creak (might be in the frame, thank god for warranties).
I am going to rework my bike setup with riser bars and seat position. I'll have the mechanic help me with my total bike setup and I'll let you know how it goes...on the "Mountain Biking" post board. Talk to you there. Later! Posted by TOK a 42 year old Weekend Warrior riding a Stumpjumper fsr comp xc / FUSO road from Thousand Oaks on 04/23/02
