 Angeles Forest Loop
Tried to ride the forest loop from Palmdale to Angeles Forest to Angeles Crest to Wrightwood back to palmdale Saturday.

I'd heard that the road from Dawson Saddle to Grassy Hollow was closed - it was and for good reason. There's no fockin road any more. We went under the locked gate and rode up to see what was up thinking maybe the avalanches weren't as bad as Darren told us at the bar at Newcomb. Pretty scary as about every 30 seconds or so rocks and debris would start rolling down the mountain onto the road - there were a couple trees about 8 feet in diameter that were splintered like kindling laying across the road with more hanging by a root or two waiting to fall. Anyhow, went as far as we could carrying the bikes over the boulders and debris, after about two miles or so the road was just gone! Farther up, the road was still buried under about 4-6 feet of snow or huge landslides. Totally sucked since it would have only been a couple thousand more feet of climbing and 45 miles home. Instead, had to ride 63 miles back the way we came and about 4,200 feet. Good ride though, 125 miles and 13.3k of up. It is totally bitchin up there right now - waterfalls and creeks, flowers, yuccas everwhere and the trees almost look healthy again.

PF and crew, are any of you riding the tour of two forests? Anyone interested in Brian Head epic 100? Hope you all got some good riding in this weekend.

I'm doing the Grand Tour double this weekend with a couple regulars and I'm almost 100% for the ToTF. I was thinking of doing the BH100 again (done the last 3) this year and my family vacation is in the same area,so I was trying to get another week off for I could just stay there, but with my boss being out, it looks like it's not going to happen. I'm still trying to work it out though.

Grand Tour is a great ride - you'll like it. Let me know when you plan some training rides so maybe we could hook up. Also let me know if you can do BH100. I have no idea how to train for a dirt century so if you have any tips.....

I think the ToTF is the only double I'll do for the rest of the year. Sure would be nice to finish a ride, I'm only 2 for 4 this year. I broke my fork hitting a big pot hole 25 miles before the finish of Heartbreak on the downhill coming into Lebec. We're flying down toward the Flying J about 45+ mph when WHAM-WHAM and then the back wheel bucks up into the air when the water bottle jammed between the back tire and seat stay, then the front fork goes into an uncontrollable death wobble as the left dropout separates from the fork blade. Thought I was a gonner but was very very lucky. New fork, headset, both hubs.

Will be great to ride with you on the ToTF. Good luck on the Grand Tour! Oh, and be careful.

If any of you want to join PF and me on the Grand Tour, please let us know and maybe we can hook up. We've already got someone that will want to pull the whole 200 and it will be all that PF and I can do to reel him in so we can suck his wheel. We're doing the lowland double.

Wish I could do the GT but have my kids this week and my littlest one is not feeling well (she's 7 and cute as a bug). Hope those of you that are going have a great ride (the lowland route skips climbing Portrero Rd thank God)! If you feel good, you can go for the 300 or 400 mile option!

If anyone ever wants to do the Angeles Forest ride, you can start in Palmdale or the Valley either one. Best thing about the ride is stopping at Newcomb Ranch at the biker bar, having a burger with onion rings and a coke (if you're brave a sierra nevada) and shootin the sheet with harley dudes in your fay-looking cycling clothes. So far 3 for 3 not getting thrown out or having the spit beat out of us ;-) I can only do these long rides every other weekend starting June 24 so if anyone's really interested, e-me.

PS: PF sure happy your boss is recovering - he is damn lucky you were watching out for him!

The forest loop sounds fun. You gotta let me know when you are out there doing those rides. I have always wanted to go to the bar after riding Blue Ridge.
            Let me know guys.

Usually alternate long rides; Santa Monica Mts, Angeles Forest, the canyons in santa clarita or whatever. Anywhere from 80 - 160 miles, all with great scenery and of course pretty damn tough. But always adjust mileage and difficulty depending on who's there and how everyone feels. So it's not like a flog and drop as many as possible, just a good sufferfest for all.

On the 24th, tentatively planning SF Valley to mulhulland to Little Sycamore/Yerba Buena to Cothrin and down to the beach on Deer Creek Rd. The part from Little Sycamore to the beach is on amazing little-traveled roads with horrible climbs but screaming wicked fun descents to make up for it. The out and back is about 90 miles and just shy of 10K climbing. If legs are shredded could head South down the beach and back to the Valley via Sepulveda. This is about 20 more miles but the climbing is less intense.
