Road Message Board

 Congrats FayUtah
Congrats to SandyUtah for his 3rd place finish in his first road race this past weekend; the Devil's Punchbowl something or other. Raise the flag of fay and wave it wildly aboard your all-carbon Eurotrash skinnybike.

      I couldn't think of a witty follow-up, so I put this instead.

Nice to see the Navy still issues those "See Spot Run" reading books.

    Thanks everyone. Here's my take-away.

Calling all MTB'ers. Buy a road bike, enter in Cat 5, take podiums!

No, seriously, this was my first time out in a road race. I've only been riding road bikes at all for about 9 months. It was pretty hard, but to hear the tales of these climbs in this race was kind of funny. Lots of people had warned that the climbs were really long and hard. But to your average SoCal MTB'er, these climbs were minor bumps. They were honestly over before I even knew they had begun.

But fun was had by all.

Those warnings must've come from NorCal-ers.

      Congrats on the podium finish!

But I think you meant to say "Calling all expert class and semi-pro MTB racers. Buy a road bike, enter Cat 5, take podiums!"
I saw a lot of names on the finish list I recognize from the expert class pack of MTB racers. Makes it just a bit tougher for us sport class MTB'ers who enter cat 5. But anyway.....

Cool course, too bad I didn't get to race it. A page from work derailed me at the last minute, and I arrived late, and ended up missing that start. Oh well, theres always next year! Anyway, congrats to those who got there on time and had a good race!

Glad to see somebody has got some sense.Good job, Nate. I agree with the climbing part as most MTB'ers seem to kick butt here. I've been on and off the road bike now for about 3 years and it's a blast.
Now when is Matt getting a road bike? And if you really want to try something fun, try a double century. You'll probaly come in first here too,but you can see that roadies can suffer too.
Was this the race put on by that bike club out in Santa Clarita?

The weird thing about USCF is that you must do 10 cat 5 rides before you can move up even if you're laping the field (I've seen this happen in Crits). That's why you see expert mtn bikers winning cat 5 RR's. And yes, mountain bikers do well at the Punchbowl RR. Last year the Pro class was won by Cameron Brenneman. Get in the 10 rides Nate and next year do the cat 4 race and I think you'll find the competition a little tougher. XTRChris. Santa Clarita Velo and Punchbowl race Director

Exactly my thoughts. And, just to clarify, I didn't mean for it to come across like I was down on road racing or that it was oh so easy, and certainly a strong finish in Cat 5 is nothing I should be patting myself on the back too hard for. But since there really is no choice but to start at the bottom, it is what it is. Sorry if I came across as a jerk.

I definitely was working hard, my heart rate was way way up there, I struggled to stay on board with the group on the 5-mile long 50+ mph descents (which take major balls on a 16 pound bike with skinny tires). And, of course, I didn't win it.

I only meant to convey that the "brutal long steep hills" I had heard about in many reports about the course, didn't really materialize. The climbs were over before I even realized they had begun. To your average socal mountain bike rider, the hills weren't much of a big deal, and I think people should get out there and try it. It was a blast.
