Like a playground out there - that's my sometimes lunchtime / afterwork ride area. Next time announce your presence and I'll meet you out there.

BTW, that particular hill's much more fun going down than up!

It was a last minute decision on where to ride while tripping through the high desert and watching the weather. I made it pretty far up (a ways past the first cutoff) that gravely SOB, considering how loose and steep it got.

Some of those little faded trails were pretty fun and I was wishing for my SS on them. It sure beat sitting out the mud in the greater LA area. If the wind had not been so strong, there was a moto track on this one huge hill on the other side of the highway near the shooters that would have been interesting to ride down. Being my height has its disadvantages in a cross-wind, even when low on the bike.

Yep the wind is a constant trail feature out here - you definitely don't want to get air
on a day like that with a crosswind or you'll end up a bloody lawn dart in Barstow!
That loose cobbly rock likes to knock chains off on the downhill so I can see why you'd reach for the SS but usually big ring middle cog holds it on pretty well.

I didn't realize they fenced off the perimeter that far out - completely sucks since there are some fun and
hair raising trails in there. Watch out for the mines, some of the holes still have ancient dynamite laying around in them.

One of the best (only best?) thing about living and working out here is that you can just
walk out the door, strap on the bike and hit the dirt and ride for hours never encountering another soul.

Add clean air to that and we have a winner! Looking to the North, I'd wager that beating the heat is not to far off either. Night riding in Summer on the rocks makes me think of Mojave Greens staying warm on those rocks and Sidewinders in the sand. They do taste just like chicken though.
